Everyday realities of the climate crisis

Following this year’s (yet another) drought and heatwave, our expert, Dr. László Hódi, highlighted two factors—one that could make daily life more difficult, and another affecting agricultural production.

Drought is detrimental not only to cultivated crops but to weeds as well, causing them to grow with visible difficulty and at a slower pace. However, they begin to flower sooner, which is also true for ragweed. Meanwhile, global warming is driving the northward expansion of locusts—as a result, the Moroccan locust and the Italian locust are being spotted in increasing numbers, both of which are capable of causing significant agricultural damage.
